Melanie delivered eggs to Sarah yesterday. She also took 8 dozen to the Buying Club of which we are members. Many members of the Buying Club seem to share similar views with their interests in organic foods, healthy people and healthy planet. The eggs were gone in no time. Plus, we now have weekly commitments for the eggs we have to share.
Watching this is amazing. People seem eager to purchase eggs "like Grandma raised" and they seem very grateful. And through this, another bit of community unfolds. We see in a very small way we are feeding others. The connection between farmer and consumer is more direct and more personal. Feeding families seems a sacred act.
In our beginning adventures here, we see a good bit of caring which is foundation for community and sharing of information which will benefit each of us. Sarah shared research from Mother Earth News which shows when compared to USDA nutrient data for commercial eggs, eggs from hens raised on pasture may contain nutritional advantages: 1/3 less cholesteral, 1/4 less saturated fat, 2/3 more vitamin A, 2 times more omega-3 fatty acids, 3 times more vitamin E, and 7 times more beta carotene (October/November 2007, pages 42-44ff). (Thanks, Sarah!)
The hennies and Grandma Crawford knew all along. What makes the hennies happy is good for the people too.
