We have had many Feathered Companions in the Garden this Year. No, the Chickens have stayed on the outside and that has been on purpose.
We have 2 Bluebird Houses that a Neighbor made for us. One is in the Garden and the other just outside. The Garden Birdhouse has been home to Tree Swallows and now to a Jenny Wren. Earlier in the summer, the Adult Tree Swallows swooped around us as we tended the Garden. When the Young fledged, they did the same. Those Birds are so Graceful. I wish I could fly like that.
The Tree Swallows and Wrens must have that Birdhouse on Time Share. The Jenny Wren moved in some weeks back. She makes no bones about the Fact that the Birdhouse and the immediate area around it are hers. She now stays close to us as we work around her House. Her Chatter tells us that, in her opinion, we need not tarry.
The Birdhouse outside the Garden has been home to Bluebirds who have regularly sat on the Fence Posts on the North Side of the Garden. Before we moved here, I thought Bluebirds were found only in pretty pictures in Calendars and Magazines. Those Beautiful Birds (which are Missouri's State Bird) make me smile.
We have also had a Male Indigo Bunting who has sat on Fence Posts at the South Side of the Garden. He is usually an Evening Companion. His lovely voice has serenaded us as we putter about. We have also had Field Sparrows that have shared their lovely Presence and Songs.
Melanie reports that House Sparrows have regularly moved back and forth between the Chicken House and the northwest corner of the Garden. Those little brown Birds are in fair numbers and have reduced the population of Worms on the Cole Crops. We 3 C's like to share.
Speaking of sharing: I should not forget to report that the Goldfinches are enjoying the Sunflower Seeds on the Maturing Sunflower Heads. They flit about the Garden in groups of 4-6. The Sun glints off their lovely yellow Feathers. Or rather, is it Sunbeams that I see dancing about?

I enjoy the birds in the garden also. I had a pair of bluebirds nesting in mine...they loved the bug treats I left on the fencepost for them.
