Molasses Making 2009

Monday, 9/14, Noon:

Hollis and Deleta came this morning. While Hollis and Deleta had checked their own Cane, the 5 of us checked the Cane on Butterfly Hill Farm. Both are sweetening up.Plans are in place for doing the 1st batch this weekend. All plans are pending, assuming weather is supportive.

1/2 of the Sorghum Cane at Butterfly Hill Farm will be stripped on Wednesday morning (9/16). Stripping will start as soon as the Dew is off, which means mid to late Morning. Cane will be moved to the site of processing on Friday morning (9/18).

The Cane will be ground and Juice collected Saturday morning (9/19). The Juice will be cooked down as soon as that process is complete. Cooking can take anywhere from 5-8 hours. "We cook until it is done." Pot Luck is at noon.

The schedule is based on the Weather being favorable. A Rainy Day is not the best day to harvest Cane or make Molasses.

We know we have some Folks who are following this process and would like to be involved. I shall post the updated Schedule as it is known on the Blog. If you are coming and want more particulars, feel free to call.

Notes on Naming: For some, choosing to call the product "Molasses" is known and familiar like a very comfortable old Shoe. For others, calling the product "Molasses" is outside the frame. If the naming is of interest, check out the Blog Entry. If it is of no interest, well, never mind.
