Eyes on the Ground: Soil Temperatures

Soil temperature is listed for Knox County (Novelty area) on the University of Missouri Agriculture Extension web site.  Novelty is not so far from here. As of Sunday, May 1, 6 inch soil temperatures under soybean residue ranged from 52-57 degrees.  http://agebb.missouri.edu/weather/reports/soysoil6.asp

String Beans take a minimum of 55 degrees (Source: Rodale's Illustrated Encyclopedia of Organic Gardening, 2002, page 341).  Planting below that minimum means that Seeds do not germinate and they rot.  Gardeners surely do get eager, but that's not the way to produce Food Crop. And it's not the way to maximize resources, which would include Human Energy.
