Nothing to Mess With

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I went to a local farmer series
at the Kirksville Permaculture Education Center.
The little house was packed.
Presentor Steve Salt
asked
the gathering:
"What are downsides
of eating locally?"
The response was:
Some years,
food crops may not do as well.
Steve noted a lot of home gardeners
have gone bust in our area
this season.
He said if we were dependent
upon only what we raised,
we would be experiencing famine
in Adair County.
Famine.
My Grandma and Grandpa
left Croatia in 1908
because there was no food.
I know deep down
that is nothing to mess with.
I also know deep down
that the Gardener's turmoils
of the season
have been tied to shifts in climate.
That is nothing to mess with.
